The expensive leaks are invisible. Somebody searched, found somebody else, and hired them. Nothing showed up in your books to tell you it happened.
The frustrating thing about losing work online is that it leaves no evidence.
A missed invoice you notice. A quote that goes cold, you remember. But somebody searching at 8am, finding a competitor, and booking them — that never reaches you. You don't know the job existed. Multiply that across a year and it's real money that never appears anywhere in your accounts.
There are three places it leaks, and they need different fixes.
Leak one: they never found you
The most common and the most expensive. You're on page three, or your Google profile is half filled in with the wrong primary category, so you don't appear in the map pack for the searches that matter.
This one is quietly brutal because it scales with how good you are. Being the best roofer in the county doesn't help if the search that decides the job never surfaces you.
Fix: the Google profile first, then the technical groundwork on the site — titles, headings, speed, schema. Profile improvements can show within weeks. Organic rankings take months, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something.
Leak two: they found you and left
They searched, they found you, they tapped through. Then the site took six seconds to load, showed stock photography of somebody else's work, and buried the phone number in a contact page two taps away.
People decide fast. A slow site on a phone with no proof of real work is a bounce, and the bounce is silent.
Fix: load fast, lead with photos of your own jobs, and put a tappable phone number where a thumb already is. Nobody has ever hired a roofer because of a stock photo of a roof.
Leak three: they called and you missed it
You were up a ladder. They didn't leave a voicemail, because almost nobody does any more. They called the next name on the list, and that was the end of it.
This is the leak owners underestimate most, because a missed call feels like nothing. It isn't. For most trades it's the single most expensive thing on this list, and it happens several times a week.
Fix: something has to answer when you can't. An AI receptionist takes the details and books the job while you're working. It doesn't have to be perfect — it has to be better than a phone ringing out.
The part that compounds
Fix one of these and you get a bit more work. Fix all three and something different happens.
More visibility brings more visits. More visits bring more jobs. More jobs bring more reviews, and reviews push you further up the map pack, which brings more visibility. It feeds itself.
That's the argument for treating this as a system rather than a one-off website. A site built once and left alone doesn't compound. It just ages.
